Overview
All ship fitter duties and supervision of lay-outs and fabrication of metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and bracing them in position within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding. Supervises lay-out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools. Confirms location and marks reference lines and positions parts in the hull, assisted by RIGGER (ship-boat mfg.).
Aligns parts in relation to each other using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls. Reviews marked location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold parts for welding or riveting. Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts. Reviews and supervises team members who tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding. Reviews and manages team members who roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines. May tack weld and be designated Fitter-Tacker (any industry).
Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and coach team members daily production activities.
- Communicate and collaborate with all functional areas to ensure jobs are completed effectively and efficiently.
- Monitor and manage team member performance, ensuring jobs are on budget and on time.
- Foster and champion continuous improvement activities to innovate business practices.
- Review upcoming jobs with stakeholders to properly plan and execute.
- Ensure all safety policies and procedures are always adhered to.
- Performs fit checks and weld inspections, as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the shift. Directly supervises all nonsupervisory personnel within the shift. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization s policies and applicable laws.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Requires a minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience.
- Ability to fabricate and layout according to certification standards.
- Effectively instruct and evaluate welder/fitters performance to meet and exceed customer expectations.
- Certification for forklift and crane operations and maintenance of certifications annually.
- Effective written and verbal communication with outside sources.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Ability to read blueprints and know GD&T.
Bachelor s degree (Accounting B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language SkillsAbility to read, write, and understand oral and written instructions, meters, dials, calibrated scales, and visual displays. Ability to receive and understand instructions via radio or phone. Ability to summarize verbal instructions.
Mathematical SkillsStrong mathematical skills and mechanical aptitude. Basic financial knowledge.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to follow instructions in logical order, apply quality standards, identify defects, compile information, and solve practical problems with common sense.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations- Valid Driver License
- Forklift Certification (must pass upon hire and maintain annually)
- Crane Certification (must pass upon hire and maintain annually)
