Overview
Under general supervision, performs responsible life‑saving work in the Ocean Rescue Division. Exercises supervision over City beach lifeguards. Works a designated zone of the beach. Work involves using independent judgement in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations, exercising safety practices and procedures. Reports to the Beach Patrol Manager or on‑duty beach patrol officer.
Qualifications- Education: High school diploma or GED
- Experience: A minimum of 1,000 cumulative hours of employment compiled in no fewer than three seasons as a seasonal open water lifeguard or a full‑time open water lifeguard at a lifeguard agency that meets the standards of USLA.
- Certifications:
- Minimum age 18
- Must be able to swim 500 meters in 10 minutes or less.
- Must be certified by an agency recognized by the Federal Government to instruct any medical aid or CPR course provided by the North Myrtle Beach Ocean Rescue Division (or obtain within 6 months of employment).
- Certified in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or Basic Life‑support.
- Certified in American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies or Emergency Medical Response.
- Good physical condition
- Possession of all members of both upper and lower extremities
- Vision correctable to 20/20
- Good character and reputation
- Valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of a course of no less than 24 hours in beach emergency vehicle operations.
- Certified as successfully completing a course consisting of a total of not less than thirty‑six (36) hours in a course which meets the curriculum requirements of the United States Lifesaving Association for Personal Rescue Watercraft.
- Preferred:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
- Emergency Medical Response Certified by the American Red Cross
- Note:
- The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
- Any certifications not possessed at hire must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation in order to continue employment with the City.
Must be physically able to operate an automobile, watercraft, passenger van, etc. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of twenty pounds of force constantly to move object. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to one hundred pounds.
