Mechanic II - Heavy Duty

Performs independent advanced skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and re-conditioning of specialized heavy equipment such as, but not limited to, fire/rescue, sanitation vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor and the Chief Mechanic.

Performs independent advanced skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and re-conditioning of light-duty automobiles, including Police vehicles, and specialized light-duty equipment such as, but not limited to, passenger vehicles, light & medium duty trucks, and various landscape maintenance/field maintenance equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor and Chief Mechanic.

This Job Description is supporting a:

• Heavy Duty Mechanic II:
  Inspects, diagnoses, and performs all phases of independent skilled repair and reconditioning of diversified heavy-duty equipment, with an emphasis on specialized heavy equipment.
• Light Duty Mechanic II:
  Inspects, diagnoses, and performs all phases of independent skilled repair and reconditioning of diversified light-duty automotive and lawn/park equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance with special attention given to assure the safety of vehicles and to eliminate premature equipment failure.
• Performs installation and repair of emergency lighting systems, cameras, sirens, and other specialized equipment, including wiring and electrical system troubleshooting.
• Performs welding and fabrication work as required.
• Performs installation and minor repair of communication radios.
• Performs trouble shooting of computerized engine control systems.
• Utilizes Fleet Management Software to record repairs, parts used, and labor expended per work order.
• Performs emergency road service to equipment outside garage including being available off-hours in case of emergencies.
• Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment.
• Monitors inventory of department equipment, parts, tires, tools, and supplies.
• Provides guidance and assistance to customers as needed.
• Oversees work and training of lower-level Fleet Management staff.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices associated with automobiles, fire/rescue, sanitation, law enforcement and other specialized vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of the principals and operation of internal combustion engines.
• Knowledge of automotive and emergency lighting and electrical systems.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.
• Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  
  Skilled in using computers for data entry, word processing and accounting purposes.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing.
• Ability to use various types of computer software.
• Ability to provide personal tools, as required.
• Ability to diagnose and trouble-shoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems associated with all types of equipment with an emphasis on specialized heavy equipment in a timely, cost-effective manner.
• Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
