About the OpportunityThe Controller plays an integral role in fostering a collaborative and upbeat workplace while serving as a key leader within the finance team. This position offers broad exposure to multiple areas of school finance and involves complex, detail-oriented accounting work that supports departmental operations. Responsibilities include managing the accurate processing, maintenance, and reconciliation of financial records in accordance with established policies;
offering guidance, recommendations, and accounting assistance to staff; reviewing and monitoring spending in relation to budget; and performing additional related duties as needed. The role operates under the general oversight of the Director of Finance and provides direct supervision to the Accountant, Accounting Clerk, Accounts Payable Clerk, and Payroll Clerk.
- Serve as a key finance leader within a mission-driven school district environment, contributing to a collaborative and positive workplace culture
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate processing, reconciliation, and maintenance of financial records in compliance with district policies and applicable regulations
- Review and approve work completed by direct reports, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing
- Manage and support cyclical accounting activities, including weekly, monthly, and quarterly close routines
- Coordinate and support internal and external audit activities, including preparation of schedules, documentation, and responses to audit inquiries
- Analyze expenditures against approved budgets, identify variances, and assist with budget development and monitoring
- Participate in financial reporting activities, including support of actuarial reports and other required financial disclosures
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to accounting staff, supporting professional development and accuracy in a complex regulatory environment
- Assist with payroll review and oversight, including bi-monthly payroll processing
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Finance and other stakeholders on financial planning, compliance, and operational initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- Prior experience working within a school district or performing school district audits strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience in a regulated, compliance-driven environment with a strong attention to detail
- Proven ability to review, supervise, and develop accounting staff while maintaining high standards of accuracy
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, budgeting, and financial reporting
- Experience supporting audits and working with external auditors
