About the Role

The Intermediate Accountant is responsible for a full range of accounting duties, including overseeing accounts payable and accounts receivable, managing banking transactions, performing account reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records. This role also supports the preparation of internal and external financial reports and analysis. The Intermediate Accountant reports directly to the Accounting Manager.

What You’ll Do Financial Accounting
  • Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, and banking functions, including EFTs.
  • Inputs monthly journal entries and bank entries/transfers.
  • Creates, updates, and processes recurring journal voucher distributions.
  • Performs monthly/quarterly balance sheet reconciliations and records necessary adjustments.
  • Oversees GST/PST remittances and related adjusting entries and reporting.
  • Reviews monthly statements for accuracy and makes required adjustments.
  • Responds to inquiries on financial transactions and budgets, making adjustments as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all statutory requirements are met, including Charitable Status, CPP/EI remittances, GST, and PST.
  • Provides reporting and analytical support to the Accounting Manager.
  • Assists with year-end audit preparation.
Payroll Support
  • Maintains a strong understanding of payroll functions to provide backup support when required.
  • Supports the Payroll and HR Administrator with ongoing workflow improvements.
  • Assists with the coordination and review of annual T4 issuance.
Budget Preparation
  • Prepares annual budget templates for distribution.
  • Assists in preparing annual budgets and budgets for funding applications.
  • Uploads approved budgets into the accounting system.
External & Management Reporting
  • Maintains accurate financial records and provides timely financial reporting to support program and project decision-making.
  • Assists with preparing quarterly consolidated financial statements.
  • Prepares budgets and reports for funders as requested by the Accounting Manager.
  • Supports the preparation of financial information required to meet funder reporting obligations.
  • Other duties as required.
Organizational Support
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of SCCSS, including participating in organization-wide initiatives as interested or requested.
  • Supports ongoing compliance with accreditation standards, new standards, and CARF requirements.
What You Bring
  • Completion of a two-year diploma in accounting.
  • Two to five years of accounting experience in a busy office environment.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards in the non-profit sector.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation applicable to charities.
  • Understanding of provincial Employment Standards and Human Rights legislation.
  • Ability to adapt to changing software environments and applications.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight reporting deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office; experience with web-based accounting systems and Net Suite ERP from a finance perspective is considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
