Role Description

The Senior Project Accountant serves as a key financial partner to project teams, operations, and executive leadership, providing financial oversight, reporting, and analysis across a portfolio of civil construction and infrastructure projects within a growing group of companies.

This position is responsible for full-cycle project accounting, including project costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, budgeting, forecasting, subcontract management, accounts receivable support, payroll coordination, equipment costing, and the preparation of financial reporting and performance analysis. The role plays a critical part in supporting project profitability, cash flow management, financial governance, and operational decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.

Working closely with executive leadership, project managers, and operations teams, the Senior Project Accountant ensures accurate and timely financial information is available to support both operational and strategic decision-making. The successful candidate will possess strong construction accounting experience, exceptional analytical skills, and a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for process improvement and financial optimization.

This role will also support the company’s transition to Sage Intacct and the continued development of project accounting, job costing, project controls, and financial reporting systems across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage full-cycle project accounting for multiple civil construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain project budgets, forecasts, commitments, cost tracking, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules while providing variance analysis and financial insights to project managers and leadership.
  • Prepare and analyze cost-to-complete forecasts, earned revenue calculations, project margin projections, and profitability reporting.
  • Support the development, monitoring, and reporting of project and financial KPIs.
  • Assist project managers with budgeting, forecasting, change orders, cost reviews, risk identification, and overall project financial performance.
  • Partner with project teams to identify cost overruns, productivity trends, project risks, and opportunities to improve project profitability.
  • Prepare and submit progress billings, labour, equipment and material (LEM) reports, holdback releases, statutory declarations, and other project documentation.
  • Manage subcontractor compliance, contract administration, and invoice validation to ensure contractual, regulatory, and budget requirements are met.
  • Monitor equipment utilization, labour costing, payroll allocations, rentals, and cost recoveries to support accurate project costing and equipment performance reporting.
  • Support cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and project collections activities.
  • Prepare month-end journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and project reporting packages.
  • Assist with year-end financial reporting, audits, and external reporting requirements as required.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of project accounting procedures, internal controls, financial governance, and best practices.
  • Act as a key finance lead in the implementation and optimization of Sage Intacct, including data migration, system configuration, workflow design, reporting development, process documentation, user training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with accounting, operations, and project teams to improve reporting accuracy, operational efficiency, and overall financial performance.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to junior accounting staff and contribute to cross-functional training initiatives as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of construction, infrastructure, heavy civil, industrial, or project accounting experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPA designation or active CPA candidate preferred.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, project forecasting, project controls, and construction accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of construction revenue recognition methodologies, including percentage-of-completion accounting, is considered an asset.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Working experience with Sage and Quick Books Online is required.
  • Experience with Quick Books Online, Sage Intacct, HCSS, and similar ERP systems is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience supporting ERP implementations, financial reporting systems, and process improvement initiatives is considered an asset.
