The Position:
Accountable to the K-12 Education Manager, the position works with other staff and agencies, both within the Nation and outside the community, to develop and implement holistic learning and educational programs. The position is responsible for assisting in the creation of effective, innovative, and culturally grounded learning for individual children and youth as well as small group programming as required.
Duties Include:- Assist students, individually and in small groups, with learning activities and/or independent study projects based on identified needs and priorities.
- Observe and document learner strengths, achievements, and needs to communicate student progress, providing information to Education Case Managers, families, and SD46 staff via formal/informal communications as appropriate.
- Operate or assist students in the operation of personal computers and other specialized instructional equipment/technology as required to support learning.
- Prepare Program Plan activities by gathering resources, booking venues and confirming guest facilitators/knowledge holders/Elders, purchasing supplies, drafting budgets for approval, etc.
- Participate in meetings, planning and liaising with Community Member Services and Education teams, families, and SD46 staff.
- May, on occasion, be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A minimum diploma or bachelor’s degree is preferred, particularly in education–related programs (an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered).
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills verbal and written.
- A comprehensive understanding of First Nations K-12 students and First Nations issues in British Columbia… knowledge of shíshálh culture an asset in particular.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respect for and from students.
- Ability to keep accurate records.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Minimum of two years working in or in a supporting role in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of current learning and student development theories would be an asset.
- Demonstrated experience in using learning strategies with learners who have complex learning needs.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle an asset
