Job Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Programs Manager and Recreation Programs Coordinator, the Summer Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for the supervision and instruction of summer camps. The employee is responsible for program planning, general safety and overall enjoyment of patrons attending the program as well as coordination of daily program operations, including customer relations, guidance and leading of camp staff.

The Summer Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for managing potential safety risks and ensuring all equipment, supplies and first aid kits are ready for program operation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure designated areas (indoors, outdoors and offsite) are free of hazards and safe to operate on a daily basis.
  • Enforce BC Work Safe and Occupational Health & Safety Guidelines at all times.
  • Fill out all Incident or First Aid Reports and provide reports to the Recreation Program Coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to camp staff regarding patron interactions and customer service.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behavior and use appropriate language at all times.
  • Provide a fun, inclusive and non‑competitive environment for patrons. Build rapport and meaningful relationships with patrons and camp staff.
  • Plan camp activities and arrange offsite trips based on camp descriptions provided by the Recreation Programmer.
  • Coordinate planning sessions with camp staff when needed.
  • Ensure all required equipment and resources are ready for programming each day.
  • Communicate to the Recreation Program Coordinator any resources, training, equipment replacement, equipment purchases or supplies needed to deliver summer camps in an innovative and developmentally appropriate environment.
  • Setup and take‑down of camp equipment each day.
  • Assist with marketing of summer camps (via social media, posters, banners, school visits etc.).
  • Ensure registration list is up to date, waiver forms are properly filled out and participant’s needs are noted and communicated to camp staff.
  • Ensure all participants have paid camp fees prior to camp starting. Communicate registration challenges with Recreation Program Coordinator.
  • Communicate behavior concerns directly with participants in a positive format. Contact parent or guardian if needed. Make the Recreation Program Coordinator aware of problem behaviors. Use positive behavior management styles to deal with challenging patron behaviors and communication exchanges.
  • Provide a high level of understanding to all patrons with program concerns and feedback.
  • Distribute evaluation forms to participants and submit all feedback to the Recreation & Cultural Programmer.
  • Remain flexible and willing to learn new skills.
  • Communicate via email, phone and in person with co‑workers and supervisor.
  • Attend meetings and in‑services as scheduled. Provide a year‑end report of recommendations.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 completion.
  • A diploma or certification in recreation, youth or early childhood education, or related field (preferred).
  • Bachelor’s in Recreation Management an asset.
  • 1–3 years of directly related experience in recreation or childcare, and at least 1 year of leadership experience related to recreation or childcare.
  • Experience in the areas of child and youth care, fitness, social and other leisure activities.
  • Level 1 First Aid CPR & AED.
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s License and safe driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a Criminal Record Check – vulnerable populations.
  • Must comply with TWN’s Vaccination Policy.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Supervisory or Leadership experience.
  • Knowledge and experience building relationships with patrons and dealing with behavior management both with children and parents/adults.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
