Squamish Nation is seeking a Language Teacher to join the Ta na wa Ns7éyx̱nitm ta Snew̓iyelh Language and Cultural Affairs Department within the Nexwníw̓mamin Ch'áwch'aw Territory & Culture Services Division. Reporting to the Manager, Language, this role is responsible for delivering immersive Squamish language instruction, developing engaging educational materials, and supporting language revitalization initiatives that strengthen community connection to language and culture.

Working closely with Elders, fluent speakers, families, schools, and community partners, you will play an important role in preserving and promoting the Squamish language for current and future generations.

What You’ll Do

Deliver engaging Squamish language instruction through a full-time teaching schedule.

Create immersive learning experiences that integrate language, culture, music, history, and traditional teachings.

Support language and cultural immersion programming for children, families, and community members.

Develop lesson plans, curriculum, monthly learning plans, and classroom activities that support language acquisition.

Travel to schools and learning institutions to deliver Squamish language classes and educational programming.

Evaluate student progress and prepare reports that support learning outcomes.

Create and maintain teaching resources including flashcards, storybooks, games, artwork, songs, and workbooks.

Develop and adapt language materials for various age groups, learning levels, and community programs.

Coordinate educational activities and field trips while ensuring appropriate protocols and safety requirements are followed.

Collaborate with language team members on language revitalization projects and departmental initiatives.

Support the maintenance and development of language resources, archives, and educational materials.

Foster a positive, culturally safe, and inclusive learning environment that reflects Sḵwx̱wú7mesh values and teachings.

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor's Degree in Education, First Nations Teaching Studies, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution. A Certificate or Diploma in Squamish Language Teaching may also be considered.

Minimum 2-3 years of related teaching experience, including experience supporting language instruction, educational programming, or cultural learning initiatives.

Proficient command of the Squamish language.

Experience developing curriculum, lesson plans, and educational resources.

Strong knowledge of Squamish culture, traditions, teachings, and history, or a demonstrated commitment to continued learning.

Experience working with children, youth, families, or community-based educational programs.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and educational technology tools.

Ability to use and navigate Squamish language learning resources and reference materials.

Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

High emotional intelligence, patience, integrity, and a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.

Experience working within or alongside First Nations communities is preferred.

Knowledge and understanding of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw history, culture, customs, land, and people is preferred.
