COWI is seeking a Heavy Civil/Structural Engineer to join our collaborative team in Halifax, NS or North Vancouver, BC. In this role, you will closely collaborate with a professional team that provides technical expertise, design leadership, project management and specialized engineering expertise on numerous infrastructure projects, and report to the Head of Discipline. Your primary tasks in our team will be related to service life assessment of existing concrete and steel structures and durability design of new concrete and steel structures, including development of materials (concrete mostly) and construction specifications, as well as involvement in structural condition assessments.

Secondary tasks will involve other aspects of bridge, tunnel, or marine engineering such as structural design, engineering services during construction tasks, bridge inspections, etc. or project management duties.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Prepare designs and calculations under the supervision of experienced engineers
  • Create standard documents such as technical and construction specifications under applicable design codes, including engineering reports, and other technical documentation.
  • Assess durability of new and existing structures constructed from both steel and reinforced concrete
  • Perform service life design of new steel and reinforced concrete structures
  • Liaise with other professionals and departments to gather information for projects
  • Conduct inspections and site visits as necessary, enhancing your first-hand experience in diverse environments.

    On top of that, you will:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or higher, with a minimum of 5 years of related experience in heavy civil structural design (bridge, tunnel, marine structures), or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Hold a

    B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering and M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Construction Materials, or related field. Graduate studies related to deterioration mechanisms affecting reinforced concrete and durability of concrete structures is required along with 5+ years of relevant experience. Having knowledge of structural steel deterioration mechanisms and associated protection measures is an asset.
  • Be a registered Professional Engineer in home province or state, or ability to obtain registrations within 12 months of employment.
  • Have prior experience in service life design, durability assessments, and modelling of chloride-induced corrosion for concrete structures.
  • Have prior experience with construction specifications (CSA A23.1, AASHTO, provincial or state specific construction specifications) and major structural design codes (CSA, AASHTO, ACI, and/or Eurocode).
  • Be conversant in the use of engineering and drafting software such as Excel, Mathcad, AutoCAD, Python, and Bluebeam Revu to efficiently produce engineering calculations and supporting documentation.
  • Have prior project management experience. Structural design experience is an asset.
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail while coordinating effectively with colleagues located across multiple time zones.
  • Have the ability and willingness to travel.
  • Possess valid NS or BC Class 5 driver's license or equivalent.
