OverviewThe Robotic & Automation Lead is a hands‑on, highly technical role focused on modernizing shipbuilding at the company through world‑class equipment, automation, and robotic technologies. This role drives ambitious automation goals, including:
- Full automation of welding in panel and block assembly processes.
- Full automation of block erection.
- Significant automation in surface pretreatment and painting.
- Advanced automation for electrical cable installation.
- The ultimate objective is the deployment of autonomous robotic systems for weld seam identification and welding without manual intervention.
- Research, evaluate, implement, and sustain advanced manufacturing solutions that improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost efficiency across welding, cutting, painting, blasting, cable pulling, forming, and material handling.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Automation Equipment and Control Systems.
- Review and/or develop control system architecture, communication network drawings, PLC and DCS panel drawings, instrument loop diagrams, junction box wiring diagrams, instrument indexes, and I/O lists.
- Lead feasibility studies, cost‑benefit analyses, and ROI assessments to support automation and capital investment business cases.
- Develop technical specifications, layouts, and implementation plans for new equipment and automated processes.
- Provide SME in welding, cutting, and forming processes, including weld distortion control and process optimization.
- Support the development and implementation of welding automation, robotic welding cells, and advanced cutting technologies.
- Support robot programming, process validation, and commissioning activities, ensuring automated solutions meet weld quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Design efficient production layouts, applying lean manufacturing principles to identify automation opportunities and optimize material flow/space utilization.
- Provide on-floor support during installation, commissioning, and ramp‑up of new equipment and processes.
- Train and support production and maintenance teams in the adoption of new technologies.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical/controls/automation, Manufacturing, or Welding Engineering. Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligibility is preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in industrial controls, robotics and automation in heavy manufacturing.
- Must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and Secret clearance.
- Demonstrated experience with welding processes (including weld distortion control), Plasma/laser/oxy‑fuel cutting systems, forming and fabrication operations, welding automation and robotic systems, and robot programming/process integration.
- Proven experience developing layouts, automation concepts, and production line designs.
- Strong background in cost analysis, feasibility studies, and capital justification for automation projects.
- Deep technical knowledge of manufacturing processes and automation technologies.
- Strong knowledge of industrial network protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profi Net, Modbus/TCP, and OPC‑UA).
- Familiarity with VFDs, PID Loops, and a variety of Instrumentation.
- Proficient in interpreting, using, and developing P&IDs, datasheets, and specifications.
- Strong knowledge and experience of PLCs and programming languages (Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider and ABB).
- Knowledge of CSA, ISA, and IEEE standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC 22.1).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar layout/design tools.
- Physically capable of working in an industrial shipyard setting.
