Position: Intern, Project Engineering (4 or 8 Months)

About the Project

The National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) is one of the largest procurement projects in Canadian history. It aims to create a sustainable shipbuilding industry, secure long‑term jobs, and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of the domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast to deliver ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

Role Overview

The Project Engineering Intern will support a multi‑disciplinary engineering team in delivering engineering work from design through to construction and acceptance. The internship focuses on ensuring that all engineering scope is completed on time and within budget while addressing issues, mitigating risks, and exploring improvement opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Apply a project management approach to complete pre‑production and production support activities, including work performed by major subcontractors, and ensure the efficient delivery of engineering outputs.
  • Support the Project Engineering Team for the Polar Icebreaker by developing tools and processes to solve sophisticated technical problems to support ship‑building milestones.
  • Identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement, and work with the supervisor to determine potential solutions.
  • Drive timely closure of technical issues to ensure that all engineering deliverables and inputs to other stakeholders are achieved and meet or exceed commitments.
  • Apply an appropriate engineering maturity management culture and lifecycle management, aligned with project objectives.
  • Ensure maturity targets are agreed with key stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Enrollment in a 2nd or 3rd year Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Integrated Engineering, Naval Architecture, or Systems Engineering degree program.
  • Passion for shipbuilding and interest in applying engineering concepts within a production environment.
  • Comfortable working in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Self‑starter with motivated curiosity and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to apply engineering skills using analytical tools and methods.
  • Explorer mindset and thrive when doing things that have not been done before.
  • Strong technical skills, including the ability to read and interpret technical specifications and drawings.
  • Excellent digital literacy with proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and manage time effectively.
  • Good organizational skills.

Location & Commitment

This position is required to be fully on‑site at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver. Full‑time commitment Monday‑Friday, 40 hours per week.

Pay & Dates

Hourly rate: $28.00 per hour.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2026.
End date:
Friday, December 18th, 2026 (4 months) or Friday, April 30th, 2027 (8 months).
