The Structural Detail Designer is responsible for 3D modeling and producing adequate production drawings to support production design at Vancouver Shipyards (VSY) in North Vancouver.
This role ensures that Detail Design 3D Models and Production Drawings are generated in accordance with VSY's standards, quality, and engineering processes and will manage 3D modeling, production design, drawing generation, and implementation of lessons learned.
Responsibilities- Create and update 3D design model content in assigned areas of structural design within project schedule and budget, aligned with design input, class society rules, flag rules, and company/international standards.
- Prepare structural manufacturing information for all stages of construction.
- Liaise with functional engineering to resolve outstanding design issues.
- Provide technical support and resolution for structural issues from design to fabrication.
- Communicate and report the plan and budget for delivering work on time to team leaders.
- Support production outputs to ensure resulting work packages for manufacturing are aligned with VSY standards and processes.
- Develop and review design drawings for fisheries, ice breaking, and naval replenishment vessels to achieve customer, Classification Society, and regulatory approval.
- Support the Manager of Structural Detail Design by guiding junior engineers, designers, or subcontractors in structural engineering and design.
- Associate Design degree, diploma, or equivalent education and experience.
- 4-6 years of relevant experience in detailed design in manufacturing or heavy industries.
- Knowledge of marine structural design, including detailed knowledge of shipbuilding and production best practices.
- Experience with ship types such as research vessels, fishing vessels, icebreakers, and naval auxiliary vessels is a strong asset.
- Excellent communication across a variety of disciplines.
- Strong technical writing skills for producing and presenting clear, detailed technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
- Ability to work in Cadmatic Hull.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Rhino, Navisworks, and e-Share.
- Above-average organizational skills with the ability to maintain organization in a changing environment, multi-task, and establish priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Sound judgment and decision-making consistent with essential job functions and corporate philosophy.
- Advanced PC and network proficiency, including troubleshooting network licenses, version control, and all MS Office.
