Overview

The Contractor – ILS Specialist II – Technical Writer provides technical writing services in support of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) deliverables within a defense and shipbuilding environment. The contractor works with the Supervisor, Technical Publications, and collaborates with engineering, logistics, and project teams to develop accurate, compliant, and user-focused technical publications in accordance with applicable customer, military, industry, and company requirements.

The contractor transforms complex engineering data into clear, accessible documentation, including operating manuals, maintenance manuals, and Illustrated Parts Catalogs, to support the safe and efficient use of naval systems and equipment throughout their lifecycle.

What you will be doing
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation under the direction of the Supervisor, Technical Publications, or a designated Technical Writer. Deliverables may include operating, maintenance and illustrated parts manuals, and related ILS documentation prepared in accordance with customer, defense, and company standards.
  • Translate engineering drawings, specifications, design data, and approved source information into clear and accurate content suitable for technical and end-user audiences.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Functional Engineering, Configuration Management, the Program Management Office, and Supply Chain, to obtain source data, resolve content gaps, and verify technical accuracy.
  • Ensure assigned deliverables comply with applicable defense documentation requirements, classification society regulations, contract requirements, and internal quality management systems.
  • Use approved authoring and content management tools, including Mad Cap,HICO IPS Suite, R4i, Arbortext, Adobe Frame Maker, XML editors, and related software, to create, update, and publish structured documentation.
  • Perform content validation, technical verification support, and publication quality checks to confirm completeness, consistency, and compliance before submitting deliverables for review and acceptance.
  • Maintain document version control and incorporate approved configuration changes throughout the period of performance.
  • Recommend improvements to documentation standards, templates, and authoring processes where these improvements support the contracted deliverables.
  • Support internal and external audits related to the quality and compliance of assigned documentation, as required by the contract.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, Communications, English, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience developing technical documentation, preferably within a defense, maritime, or heavy engineering environment.
  • Experience developing structured documentation using applicable standards and specifications
  • Familiarity with defense or shipbuilding industry standards and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) frameworks is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate engineering drawings, data, and specifications into accurate documentation.
What you must have
  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, Communications, English, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience developing technical documentation, preferably within a defense, maritime, or heavy engineering environment.
  • Experience developing structured documentation using applicable standards and specifications.
