The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion and practice of shíshálh culture, language and laws within our swiya.
The Mental Wellness and Substance Use (MWSU) Social Worker is a registered Social Worker (RSW) who provides mental wellness and substance use prevention programming, psychosocial support and cultural supports to Priority Populations. The incumbent will provide an advanced level of specialized expertise in case management for clients with Mental Wellness and Substance Use challenges. In the spirit of reconciliation, a holistic perspective of wellness is vital.
This is a term position through March 31, 2028.
The Candidate:
- Identify community members who would benefit the most from MWSU's support to improve health outcomes.
- Establish and maintain effective client-focused relationships.
- Perform comprehensive health assessments, identifying risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Create and revise care plans as needed.
- Effectively manage a client caseload within a team-based, collaborative work environment.
- Help clients access drug and alcohol treatment services.
- Coordinate harm reduction initiatives and peer programs.
- Educate community members on how to reduce the harms associated with substance use.
- Connecting clients with Indigenous Elders/traditional supports; arranging group activities and events.
- Support and help develop programs/projects that improve access to mental wellness and substance use services and other health services (i.e. maternal and child health, primary care, oral health services, etc.).
- Arrange training and educational opportunities across the organization (occasionally including chief/council and housing trustees) to build understanding and develop skills related to MWSU.
- Work collaboratively with the Health Team, Supportive Family Housing, and Child and Family Services teams.
- Perform all other duties within the scope of the position and as requested.
Skills and Abilities:
- A Degree in Social Work (BSW).
- A Registered Social Worker (RSW) in good standing with the college or professional association applicable to the provider’s profession(s).
- Is entitled to practice in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia.
- Two (2) years of recent experience in case management working with individuals with complex mental health, addiction, and chronic medical concerns or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle.
- Valid BC Driver's License.
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
