About the RoleReporting to the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Technician performs hands‑on maintenance across building, property, mechanical, and equipment systems. The successful candidate will work with internal teams, contractors, trades, and service providers to maintain a safe, functional, and well‑maintained facility.
This is a hands‑on position requiring sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative facilities team.
Key ResponsibilitiesFacility and Grounds
- Support the day‑to‑day operation, maintenance, and upkeep of buildings, grounds, facility systems, and equipment.
- Perform general property maintenance, including the upkeep of indoor and outdoor areas and waste removal.
- Complete minor building repairs, including painting, basic carpentry, and basic plumbing.
- Perform minor mechanical maintenance and repairs, including replacing belts, bearings, and shafts and completing basic equipment repairs.
Equipment & Laboratory Upkeep
- Perform routine maintenance on laboratory and facility equipment, including:
- Changing air and water filters
- Cleaning scrubber nozzles
- Greasing bearings.
- Operate a forklift to move pallets, equipment, waste, and other materials as required
Coordination & Procurement
- Assist the Facilities Manager and Facilities Coordinator with maintenance activities and facility‑related projects.
- Coordinate with trades, contractors, and service providers for maintenance, repairs, inspections, and specialized work.
- Purchase and transport building materials, tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
- Determine required materials and supplies and place orders in accordance with established processes
- Assess maintenance requirements and determine when qualified trades or contractors are required.
- Support facility improvement, maintenance, and construction projects.
Documentation, Safety & Support
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, logbooks, work orders, schedules, and documentation.
- Follow established procedures, maintenance schedules, and quality standards.
- Comply with ALS health, safety, environmental, and operational policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Technical & Mechanical Aptitude: Working knowledge of HVAC systems and DDC control systems and Basic plumbing knowledge. Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and building systems
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to perform general building repairs, routine maintenance and troubleshooting problems using sound judgement. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, instructions and equipment documents
- Software & Systems: Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Experience using a computerized maintenance management system, such as MaintainX, is an asset.
- Work Style & Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent time management, organizational, and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervisor while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Safety & Compliance: Demonstrated integrity, reliability, initiative, and commitment to workplace safety. Ability and willingness to obtain any additional certifications required for the role (including forklift certification or operating experience, which is an asset; training will be provided as required.
