Job DescriptionAs a Senior Optics Physicist/Research Scientist, you will be responsible for the analysis of industry requirements and the generation of digital holography optical system configurations. You will design systems, model and build customized parts, develop innovative algorithms, implement them in software, and conduct experiments.
The role requires hands‑on experience setting up optical system hardware in laboratory environments and performing iterative experiments to test algorithms, accurately aligning and calibrating each optical component. You will collaborate with researchers, engineers, and production specialists to improve and develop new digital holographic microscopy and report R&D status and results directly to the CEO.
Responsibilities- Lead the R&D team, analyze user requirements, map out an R&D strategy for digital holographic microscopes and 3D sensors, schedule R&D, construct an R&D budget, and collaborate with the Business Development team.
- Refine and redefine product specifications requested by customers.
- Study and select optical parts/components for optimal product design of holographic microscopes and 3D sensors, including building custom parts with vendors.
- Design digital holographic microscopes and 3D sensors, including lasers, optics, mechanics, electronics, cameras, spectrometers, and computers.
- Design and implement optical modelling/simulation software platforms to prove algorithms.
- Invent novel holography and image‑processing algorithms, implement and prove them in MATLAB, Python, or C/C++, tune and calibrate the system, and experiment independently or with team staff.
- Research and develop film‑thickness measurement algorithms for multi‑layered thin‑film stacks on semiconductor wafers or OLED displays.
- Develop an auto‑numerical refocusing algorithm and a single‑shot phase‑shifting algorithm for on‑axis systems.
- Collaborate with machining and integration companies to prototype microscopes.
- Create a testbench prototype and engineering samples by assembling and integrating parts.
- Analyze data and communicate results through technical reports and presentations.
- Contribute to intellectual‑property development and documentation, including product specifications, system drawings, bills of materials, white papers, and seminar documents.
- Lead other application‑software engineers to fulfill project goals, train engineers, and train customers on our technologies.
- Report R&D progress to management on a regular basis.
- Ph.D. in Optics, Physics, Medical Physiology, Metrology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or relevant disciplines.
- Minimum 5+ years of scientific and applied research in digital holographic microscopy or industry‑level experience in optical system design and 3D sensor product development.
- Extensive knowledge of optical design, modelling/simulation methods, physical optics, diffractive optics, phase modulators, fiber optics, coherent / incoherent illumination, and spectrometers.
- In‑depth knowledge of code development and hands‑on coding experience in MATLAB, Python, or C/C++.
- Understanding of simulation tools and their assumptions.
- Experience interfacing with cameras and controllers via USB or PCIe.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast‑paced startup environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Ph.D. with 6 years of industry‑level digital holography and/or 3D sensor R&D experience.
- In‑depth knowledge of image processing, speckle removal, and AI techniques.
- Experience with end‑to‑end design and prototyping chain including thermal control, vibration isolation, and manufacturing evaluation.
- Equity or stock option for qualified employees after annual performance review and company target growth.
- Premium health insurance after a probationary period.
- Standard vacation, paid sick leave, and flexible time off between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
- Parking space provided.
