Porter

The portering service supports the daily running of a wide range of ancillary services across hospital, health centre and other Trust sites. The portering team works alongside Trust staff to ensure the Trust is enabled in its delivery of front‑line health care service. Your role involves many tasks which maintain the smooth running of the Trust sites. As a porter you will perform a generic range of duties and skill sets.

duties & responsibilities
  • Clear pathways of snow and ice, spread grit and clear leaves/litter when necessary.
  • Flush identified water systems, complete and file relevant paperwork.
  • Prepare rooms for meetings, including transferring equipment and refreshments.
  • Reception and delivery to wards/departments of stores, mail, equipment, samples, beds, bedding, furniture, medical equipment, CSSD, and collection/delivery of blood and medication.
  • Delivery of all laundry/linen to wards and departments.
  • Collect soiled linen, clinical waste, refuse and recycling from all wards/departments.
  • Dispose of all waste in accordance with Trust policy and monitor external waste collection.
  • Collect oxygen cylinders from stores for delivery to wards, return empty cylinders for supplier collection, connect J/W‑size cylinders to the medical gas pipe system (MGPS) manifold, check for leakages daily and report hazards.
  • Order new cylinders in liaison with ward staff and provide daily medical gas provision reports.
  • Escort or direct patients and visitors, handle enquiries.
  • Assist in site audits requested by the Facilities Manager.
  • Ensure parking areas remain clear and accessible for ambulances, delivery vehicles, etc.
  • Report issues/defects through the Helpdesk.
  • Carry out any other portering‑related duties, both routine and non‑routine, as requested by the Facilities Manager.
As a Portering department member you will be expected to:
  • Report for duty punctually.
  • Participate in drafting duty rosters to ensure coverage during sickness and annual leave; be flexible and cover other sites when needed.
  • Wear issued uniform and comply with the Uniform Policy/PPE.
  • Maintain a clean, smart appearance.
  • Attend induction training programmes and mandatory training as required.
  • Observe changes in departmental or Trust policies by reading memoranda and notice boards.
Person specification Qualifications
  • Full clean driving licence.
  • GCSE equivalent in Maths and English.
Experience
  • Experience in a customer‑facing role.
  • Experience in providing a support service.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment.
Skills, abilities and knowledge
  • Flexible attitude and approach to work.
  • Independent transport arrangements.
  • Willingness to cover geographical locations as directed.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise workload.
  • Articulate, calm, polite and well‑motivated with a positive attitude to customer care.
  • Proven experience as part of a team.
  • Movement and handling of medical gas.

  • Written communication via a log or hand‑over book.
