An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Licensing Officer to join our Licensing Service on a 10-month fixed-term maternity cover contract. The role is based within our Western team, with a primary location of Northallerton or Richmond, starting in September 2026.
Our ServiceThe Licensing Service carries out an important regulatory function, undertaking a range of duties to help ensure public safety and support businesses throughout the North Yorkshire Council area.
The RoleThe role involves providing excellent customer service across the full range of local authority licensing functions, including Alcohol, Entertainment, Taxis, Animal Activities, and Gambling. This is a very varied and fast‑paced role where full training and support will be provided.
The team provides advice and guidance, processes applications within legal time frames, carries out inspections, and investigates complaints. This involves working closely with various stakeholders, including internal and external partner organisations such as the Police, Fire Service, and local businesses.
Responsibilities- Processing applications and producing licences within legislative timescales.
- Inputting and interrogating statistical data.
- Providing professional advice to licensing enquiries.
- Arranging and undertaking face-to-face appointments.
- Investigating complaints and responding to requests for service.
- Identifying service improvements.
- Liaising with internal and external agencies.
- Direct experience of or the ability to understand and apply regulation, law, and public safety.
- A professional, welcoming, and positive attitude.
- Ability to multi‑task and manage a varied workload in a flexible environment.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to keep clear and accurate records.
- Good IT skills and experience in using Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
The three areas are based on Parliamentary constituency boundaries and are as follows:
- Central:
Selby, Ainsty, Harrogate, and Knaresborough - Western:
Skipton, Richmond, Northallerton, and Ripon - Eastern:
Scarborough, Whitby, Malton, and Thirsk
Although primarily based in either Northallerton or Richmond, you will need to travel between the offices within the western area to provide demand‑led support, attend meetings, and training. You will need a full driving licence.
