Assistant Professor of Art
The Department of Art at Smith College invites applications for a tenure‑track assistant‑professor position in Studio Art, effective July 2026.
Responsibilities- Tutor undergraduate students in studio practice, including a strong foundation in book arts, publication formats, letterpress, and diverse printmaking techniques.
- Teach two studio courses per semester (approximately four per year) such as Drawing I and the Senior Studio Capstone, with possible additional offerings based on the candidate’s specialization.
- Manage the typography/letterpress studio and share oversight of other print‑making facilities in collaboration with faculty and staff.
- Contribute to departmental and college committees, mentor undergraduates, and participate in interdisciplinary and consortial programs.
- Engage in curricular development and practice‑based travel; support the College’s generous sabbatical policy.
- Active studio practice in artist’s books and publications with a strong understanding of contemporary critical issues and histories of art, especially expanded print media.
- Commitment to undergraduate teaching and experience with diverse student populations across the liberal arts.
- MFA or equivalent terminal degree in art or a related field earned by the time of appointment.
- College‑level teaching experience beyond graduate school.
- Experience with community‑facing practices (interactivity, collectivity, activism, distribution, etc.) is preferred.
Competitive salary for new‑hired assistant professors with a terminal degree ranges from $92,000
–$96,000 in the first year of the tenure clock (Fall 2026). Salary decisions account for teaching and work experience, market factors, disciplinary considerations, and internal equity.
