SummaryThis position serves as a Boiler Plant Operator Leader in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) of the VA Central Western Mass (VACWM) located in Leeds, MA.
The position is under the general supervision of the Electrical & Boiler Shop Supervisor.

Physical effort and work conditions:
The employee must be physically able to walk, stand, climb ladders and stairs, crawl inside tight spaces such as boilers, and perform heavy lifting. Must tolerate heat stress generated by Boiler Plant equipment within an enclosed, ventilated environment. Must work in bent, prone, or crouched positions; have good or corrected vision for observing water columns and gauges; have good hearing for detecting noises indicating trouble with boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Work is performed in dusty, dirty locations at extreme ambient temperatures, in inclement weather, in confined spaces and noisy environments. Incumbent is exposed to cuts, abrasions, bruises, and works from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and hard‑to‑reach places.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Qualifications will be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element (WG‑2 and higher), and eligible candidates will be rated on the remainder of the job elements. Respondents must provide detailed descriptions of experiences on resumes, including start/end dates, and may receive credit for paid, unpaid, and volunteer experience.
Duties- Lead the work section employees in the proper maintenance, repair, and operations of the Boiler Plant and its associated machinery and equipment.
- Schedule all training for shop employees and maintain individual training records according to policy and procedures.
- Work closely with all new installations— in‑house projects— boiler inspections, review of project blueprints, inspection of contractor submittals, and review of new equipment and material submitted by vendors.
- Check inventory of shop supplies and materials to ensure that proper quantity is on hand at all times.
- Order needed equipment, parts, and supplies to complete repairs.
- Assign work orders.
- Inspect equipment—equipment rooms, work areas—and ensure cleanliness and safety.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation, minor repair, lubrication, and adjustment of all Boiler Plant equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of installation, modification, maintenance, and repair— and troubleshooting— of commercial fire tube boilers and Boiler Plant equipment.
