Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA)
New Barn School – Newbury
Job Purpose
To support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and associated learning difficulties. The SEN Teaching Assistant will work under the direction of the class teacher and SENCO to help pupils access learning, develop independence, and achieve their full potential in a safe and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Teaching & Learning
* Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with EHCPs.
* Assist in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
* Adapt learning materials to meet individual needs.
* Support pupils in accessing a broad and balanced curriculum.
* Promote positive engagement in lessons and activities.
Pastoral & Behaviour Support
* Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
* Support emotional regulation using agreed strategies.
* Implement positive behaviour management techniques.
* Assist with personal care where required.
* Promote independence, resilience, and social skills development.
Safeguarding & Wellbeing
* Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times.
* Monitor and record pupil progress and wellbeing.
* Contribute to risk assessments and support plans.
* Promote a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment.
Teamwork & Communication
* Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals.
* Attend relevant meetings, training sessions, and CPD opportunities.
* Communicate effectively with parents/carers when required.
* Contribute to annual reviews and progress reports.
Person Specification
Essential
* Experience working with children or young people with SEN (particularly ASC/SEMH).
* Understanding of safeguarding and child protection.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Patient, resilient, and adaptable approach.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Desirable
* Relevant Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
* Team Teach or other behaviour management training.
* Experience working in a specialist school setting.
* Knowledge of autism-specific strategies (e.g., visual timetables, structured routines).
Working Hours
Full-time, term-time only (Monday–Friday).
