Book Trust

Book Trust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. Our work is rooted in the belief that every child, especially those from low-income or vulnerable family backgrounds, deserves the chance to enjoy reading and all the lifelong benefits it brings. Reading is for all children. Our work focuses on children and families in greater need of our support. Reading can help children overcome inequalities before they deepen, giving them the best start in life.

Our work is deeply woven into the wider support system for children and families, enabling our partners to integrate reading support into their services. Together, we respond to local needs and reach families wherever they are, especially in communities where our support can make the greatest difference.

  • We support 1.4 million children and families each year
  • We work with over 19,200 settings across education, libraries, health, children’s social care and early help
  • We have a network of over 34,000 partners delivering our programmes to change reading behaviours.
About the Role

We're looking for a Digital Content Designer to help shape and improve the digital experience for partners, supporters and families who engage with Book Trust online. You'll be passionate about creating digital content that makes a difference and enjoy understanding user needs, solving problems and turning complex information into simple, useful experiences. You're equally comfortable writing content, analysing performance data and collaborating with colleagues from different disciplines.

In this role, you'll work at the intersection of content, user experience and digital delivery, creating engaging content that helps people find what they need on our channels, especially the website. You'll use evidence, insight and user needs to design, test and improve content across Book Trust, working closely with communications, marketing, design and innovation, plus many others from across the organisation.

You'll champion content design principles, ensuring that our digital content is accessible, inclusive and genuinely useful for our audiences. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys combining creativity, problem-solving and user-centred thinking to create meaningful digital experiences that will support Book Trust's mission to get more children reading.

What you'll be doing

Designing content around user needs

  • Create and develop content based on user needs, organisational goals and audience insight.
  • Translate complex information into content that is clear, accessible and easy to understand.
  • Work with the Digital Engagement Analyst to optimise user journeys that help people complete key tasks and find relevant information.
  • Apply content design principles to improve the effectiveness and usability of Book Trust's digital channels.
  • Work collaboratively with subject matter experts to identify content opportunities and solve user problems.

Creating and managing digital content

  • Write, edit and publish content across the Book Trust website and other digital platforms aligned to priorities set by the Web & Digital Operations Manager.
  • Structure content using information architecture, content modelling and best practice for digital reading.
  • Manage content within the CMS, ensuring consistency, accuracy and quality.
  • Carry out content audits and identify opportunities to simplify, consolidate or improve content as part of continuous improvement and day to day digital delivery.

Using insight to improve the user experience

  • Use web analytics, search data, user feedback and research…
