Effective, January 1, 2026, the new salary range for this position will be $102,946 - $154,412 per year in accordance with the PEGO collective agreement provisions.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work out of any of the posted headquartered locations.

About the job

In this role, the Lead Engineer will provide specialized engineering leadership and Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) expertise to support provincial workplace safety programs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert engineering support for OHS investigations and prepare forensic technical reports.
  • Analyze evidence, oversee third‑party testing and serve as an expert witness when required.
  • Develop engineering compliance standards and conduct quality assurance reviews.
  • Represent the ministry on committees and contribute to standards, guidance and technical briefings.
  • Lead major engineering projects and monitor emerging OHS trends and technologies.
  • Mentor engineers and inspectors, providing technical direction and training.
Qualifications – Mandatory Requirements
  • Accredited as a Professional Engineer in a Canadian province or territory and will obtain a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) licence as a condition of accepting the position.
  • Valid driver’s licence or equivalent recognised by the province of Ontario.
  • Must be able to travel, including to remote locations, and use various modes of transportation.
  • Carry and maintain assigned OPS assets.
  • Work outside in varied weather and climate conditions when required in the field.
  • Use all prescribed safety materials, equipment, devices and clothing in prescribed circumstances.
  • Work in environmentally challenging or physically demanding conditions (e.g., confined spaces, climbing ladders, standing or walking for a significant period).
  • Manage hazardous materials.
Qualifications – Specialized Knowledge
  • Knowledge of engineering theories, concepts, principles and practices in relevant disciplines (electrical, mechanical, structural, mining) and other disciplines related to OHS.
  • Sound engineering practice related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act to conduct quality assurance assessments.
  • Inspection and investigation principles, techniques and procedures within a wide variety of workplace settings to conduct investigations and provide reliable recommendations.
Qualifications – Communication & Leadership Skills
  • Provide professional engineering opinions and elaborate on technical issues during trials and inquests.
  • Provide technical input into briefing notes, senior management and stakeholder inquiries.
  • Develop technical briefing materials, reports on engineering issues and prosecution briefs, and draft and update regulations.
  • Communicate advice and guidance on contentious matters.
  • Conduct related studies and research, identify issues and make recommendations on actions and new standards.
  • Respond to inquiries from clients and stakeholders on OHS and engineering issues, concepts and standards and their applications.
  • Communicate with professionals and other counterparts to provide expertise and participate in inspections and investigations.
Qualifications – Project Management & Risk Management
  • Knowledge of project management and change management theories and methodologies to plan and lead engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of risk management and assessment methodologies to evaluate high‑risk and high‑impact issues and make recommendations.
Qualifications – Analytical & Problem Solving Skills
  • Review, examine and assess OHS quality assurance reports and certifications to monitor engineer compliance.
  • Conduct investigations, identify causes and contraventions under the OHS Act.
  • Investigate incidents and conduct technical complex audits to determine non‑compliance factors.
  • Conduct research to monitor trends, identify significant changes and prioritize workplaces for inspection.
Qualifications – Computer Skills

Demonstrate proficiency in computer software to produce engineering reports, complete calculations and drawings, perform analysis and draft a variety of materials.
