The nws is a joint canada and united states early-warning radar system with 47 sites located in northern canada; a control centre and support centre located in north bay, on and a contract management office located in ottawa, on.

the tower painting – team lead role is a hands-on working team lead position responsible for supervision of a small crew in the completion of radar tower painting and related tower maintenance tasks. Situated across the arctic in remote north warning system (nws) sites in northern canada this fly-in fly out (fifo) term position will start in the spring-approximately june 1 through september 30 – and travel to various long range and short range radar sites as assigned by the operations program manager.

pre-deployment training will be provided prior to starting this role. The training is expected to be confined spaces training, working at heights, with possibility of others to be added.

this position is covered under the provision of the collective agreement with the international brotherhood of electrical workers (i.b.e.w.) local 2228.

responsibilities:
  • prepares sites for the application and repair of coatings (paint, varnish, lacquer) to industrial surfaces on the radar towers
  • cleaning, sanding, patching, mixing colours, operating painting tools (brushes, rollers, sprayers)
  • supervise and assist the team/labourers ensuring all repair and painting activities are performed in compliance with current safety directives and safework procedures, reporting on any deficiencies and reporting of any spills, leaks or other emergencies
  • performs other duties/projects as assigned to support the overall program and mission and other initiatives of nasittuq
qualifications:
  • strong working knowledge and experience of painting techniques and materials in a commercial setting with minimum 5 years’ proven experience as a painter
  • proven team leadership/supervisory experience in painting operations with the ability to manage projects, oversee labourers preferably in a unionized environment
  • previous training in whmis, first aid, working at heights and confined spaces
  • valid class 5 driver’s license with a clear abstract
  • physically fit and able to perform physical job functions in all weather conditions
  • employment is conditional on ability to receive and maintain a government of canada security status to the reliability level.
  • proven ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with an ability to read/understand technical documents
  • certifications/training in environmental awareness, bear awareness an asset
  • previous experience working in remote arctic locations ideal
