Critical Care Unit

The Critical Care Unit is a 16‑bed specialized unit caring for critically ill patients who require constant monitoring and whose conditions can be life threatening. Low nurse‑to‑patient ratios assure close monitoring and early detection of any subtle changes in patient condition. We provide care to cardiac, medical and surgical patients (from pediatric to geriatric). A team of specially educated and experienced staff delivers specialized care with state‑of‑the‑art monitoring systems.
The team consists of Anesthetists, Internists, Surgeons, Registered Nurses, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Social Workers and Pastoral Care.
- Current Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers certification required (within the last twelve months).
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
- Current Certificate in I.V. Therapy and Central Line Management required.
- Coronary Care Course (minimum 25 hours) and/or Lead II/12 Lead Interpretation Course (minimum 15 hours) required.
- Minimum 2–3 years of medical/surgical experience within the last 2–3 years required.
- Minimum 1–2 years of critical care experience within the last 2–3 years required.
- Critical Care Certificate or in the process of obtaining one is an asset.
- Must have or be able to obtain certification of added nursing skills and delegated medical acts specific to the C.C.U. by the end of the orientation period:
- Cardioversion/defibrillation
- Application of external pacemaker
- Arterial line management
- Emergency drug administration
- Ventilator management
- Central line management with CVP monitoring
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners.
- Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups.
- Commitment to continuing education annually and to quality improvement.
- Ability to assume an effective leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team.
- Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate.
- Ability to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients.
- Problem‑solving ability and function in a fast‑paced environment.
- Demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Commitment to ensuring personal safety, safety of workers, patients, volunteers and visitors.
- Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events.
- Good attendance and work record.
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate proficiency level.
Pay rate, benefits and other terms and conditions are as per the ONA Local 020 Collective Agreement.
