Critical Care Unit

The Critical Care Unit is a 16‑bed specialized unit caring for critically ill patients who require constant monitoring and whose conditions can be life threatening. Low nurse‑to‑patient ratios assure close monitoring and early detection of any subtle changes in patient condition. We provide care to cardiac, medical and surgical patients (from pediatric to geriatric). A team of specially educated and experienced staff delivers specialized care with state‑of‑the‑art monitoring systems.

The team consists of Anaesthetists, Internists, Surgeons, Registered Nurses, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Social Workers, and Pastoral Care.

• Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months).
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate required.
• Current Certificate in I.V. Therapy and Central Line Management required.
• Coronary Care Course (min. 25 hrs.) and/or Lead II/12 Lead Interpretation Course (min. 15 hrs.) required.
• Minimum 2–3 years Medical/Surgical experience within the last 2–3 years required.
• Minimum 1–2 years Critical Care experience within the last 2–3 years required.
• Critical Care Certificate or in the process of obtaining is an asset.
• Must have or be able to obtain certification of added nursing skills and delegated medical acts specific to C.C.U. by the end of orientation period:
• Cardioversion/defibrillation;
  Application of external pacemaker;
  Arterial line management;
  Emergency drug administration;
  Ventilators;
  Central Line management with CVP monitoring.

• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
• Work independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners.
• Provide health teaching to individuals and groups.
• Commit to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement.
• Effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team.
• Assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate.
• Meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients.
• Problem‑solve and function in a fast‑paced environment.
• Demonstrate assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills.
• Basic computer knowledge.
• Commit to ensuring personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors.
• Support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events.
• Maintain good attendance and work record.
• Bilingualism (advanced level English/French) required. Unilingual candidates may be considered if the French requirement has been met or no successful bilingual candidates are available; a formal French test will be conducted to evaluate proficiency.

Pay rate, benefits, and other terms and conditions are as per the ONA Local 020 Collective Agreement.
