Position Overview

The Associate Director of Student Activities & New Student Orientation is responsible for the administration, implementation, and assessment of student development programs designed to foster student engagement in a welcoming and inclusive campus community of approximately 2,000 undergraduate students and 225 student organizations. The Associate Director is also responsible for leading Carleton's first‑year orientation program, New Student Week (NSW). Additionally, the Associate Director assists with managing the Sayles-Hill Campus Center and several other student‑led campus facilities.

The Associate Director is supported by a Director, one Assistant Director, a Student Activities Coordinator, and approximately 125 student employees. This is a 12‑month, full‑time position with occasional evening and weekend commitments.

Compensation

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $66,700 and $68,900. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job‑related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and assess a variety of student events, programs and services throughout the academic year and during breaks
  • Assist with managing multiple budgets totaling approximately $1M
  • Coordinate the recruitment, advisement, and supervision of approximately 120 paid student employees and 125 student volunteers
  • Supervise one full‑time Assistant Director and multiple student employees
  • Design and maintain departmental websites, student organization databases, and various social media platforms
  • Coordinate Carleton's first‑year orientation program, New Student Week (NSW)
  • Coordinate Senior Week (post academic classes/pre‑commencement)
  • Manage the Carleton Cupboard (food shelf) and the Carleton Winter Wardrobe program
  • Develop and evaluate policies for student organizations and student‑led facilities, including KRLX (campus radio station), The Carletonian (student newspaper), The Cave (student‑run entertainment venue), The Carleton Cupboard (food pantry), Nourse Little Theater (performance venue), and a band rehearsal room
  • Oversee the management of Carleton's signature traditions, including Sproncert (i.e., Spring Concert), Midwinter Ball, Late Night Trivia, and Date Knight.
  • Address risk management issues related to advising student organizations, including student travel, event registration, contract negotiation and events with alcohol
  • Serve as a resource and primary advisor for multiple student organizations, including various athletic and recreation‑based groups
  • Advise student staff in the creation of various publications, marketing materials, and social media promotions
  • Perform the duties of the Director in their absence
  • Manage the daily operations of the Student Activities Office
  • Assist with the assessment initiatives of the Student Activities Office
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Student Affairs in Higher Education, Higher Education Administration, or related field and a minimum of three years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students and colleagues
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting inclusive student learning environments
  • Desire to support students at a small, private, residential, liberal arts college
  • Experience with event planning and implementation
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally utilize a flexible work schedule to participate in occasional evening and weekend events
  • Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced, vibrant work environment with frequent interruptions
