Overview: The Rajagopal Lab in the department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is looking for a Senior Research Technician who performs independently complex research studies, experiments and assays allowing for the advancement of scientific analysis and discovery in studies of retinal metabolism, diabetes, and blinding illnesses.

  • Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians.
  • Enters data and maintains current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality.
  • Performs biochemical assays using mouse and human retinal tissue, maintaining mouse colonies with specific genetic modifications, and keeping logs of inventories.
  • May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
  • Organizes and maintains required documentation on lab and/or specimen conditions and develops and summarizes information into usable formats or presentations.
  • Assures compliance with established safety procedures, compliance requirements, and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists in the training and development of technicians, acting as a group leader.
  • Acts as a representative for the PI and ensures procedures and protocols are adhered to consistently and effectively meet department's standard. Should exhibit a high degree of independent problem solving and ability to conduct research on assigned projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
  • Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

Individuals with experience in one or more of the following techniques: western blotting, quantitative PCR, immunofluorescence imaging, cell culture, mouse colony management and husbandry.
