Response Officer I

The Response Officer I is a personable and service‑oriented professional who plays a crucial role in campus safety in an unarmed capacity. They work in a collaborative, team‑based environment and assist Response Officers II and Leads in both emergency and non‑emergency situations, providing support to faculty, staff, patients, and visitors with confidence and empathy. Responsibilities include patrolling the campus, offering support to the campus community, and enforcing University policies and criminal laws.

Assignments may involve vehicle or foot patrol as part of a coordinated team effort. All officers should be prepared to administer general first aid as part of their role.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists Response Officers II during emergency and non‑emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus.
  • Provides Emergency Management support during larger‑scale incidents.
  • Provides outstanding customer service with a friendly, professional demeanor.
  • Performs patrols, building checks, and safety assessments.
  • Assists visitors, opens doors, provides escorts, and assists with way finding.
  • Gathers information for reports and assists with follow‑up tasks.
  • Supports parking enforcement and campus navigation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Location / Working Conditions
  • Typically works 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.
  • Alternative work schedule as a regular part of the job (on‑call, shifts, evenings, and weekends).
  • Requires extensive safety training.
  • Requires protective devices.
  • Response Officers perform duties in the established uniform, primarily on foot.
  • Officers assigned to the Bike Patrol or other special duties may be provided with a bicycle or motor vehicle.
Physical Effort
  • Typically standing or walking.
  • Typically running or climbing.
  • Typically, bending, crouching, and stooping.
  • Occasional lifting (25 – 50 lbs.).
Equipment
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Office equipment.

Required Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.

Certifications / Professional Licenses: St. Louis Metropolitan Security License – St. Louis City / St. Louis County, St. Louis Metropolitan Security License – within 30 days of hire – St. Louis City / St. Louis County.

Work Experience: Officer In An Academic Or Other Professional Environment (1 Year).

Skills: Not Applicable.

Driver's License: A Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) license and a good driving record are required for this position.
