Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Learn tasks associated with maintenance and operation of a water distribution system.
- Use tools and equipment required for the job.
- Install, repair, and replace water mains, services, valves, fire hydrants, and meters under direction.
- Interact with customers as a company representative.
- Perform basic customer support activities for installation, modification, service, and repair of water distribution equipment.
- Locate water main and service lines; perform routine maintenance such as system flushing, valve exercising, and fire hydrant maintenance.
- Inspect and test equipment, record accurate details of working order, and conduct fire flow tests.
- Notify customers of scheduled and emergency outages; develop and implement shut‑downs for planned or emergency work.
- Operate heavy machinery, including a dump truck and backhoe.
- Follow basic safe‑work practices—traffic control, PPE, trench shoring, hazardous materials, confined spaces, and electrical safety.
- Perform meter reads, field investigations, and delinquent account collections.
- Operate company vehicles and equipment safely; prepare daily logs and reports.
- Available for emergency response, 24 hours/day, seven days/week; must reside within 25 miles of the nearest water system boundary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- General PC skills.
- Good written and verbal communication; strong organizational skills.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- For Operator I:
Not applicable. - For Operator II: SWRCB Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate; two years as Operator I or equivalent experience.

Physical demands include standing, climbing, walking, lifting, bending, pulling, pushing, grasping, reaching, stooping, crouching, sitting, typing, reading, writing, and speaking for extended periods of time. Work may be in all weather conditions throughout the day.
