The City of Norwalk is hiring one (1) Full‑Time Recreation Coordinator to fill a vacancy in its Recreation and Park Services Department, assigned to the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex and Aquatics Division. The division is responsible for leisure class programming, facility operations, facility reservations, aquatics recreation programming and operations, and special events. It will also assist in numerous capital park projects.
The ideal candidate must have experience in recreation programming and facility management, class scheduling, volunteer management, managing facility reservation permits, collaborating with local organizations and community groups, and maintaining facilities to meet the needs of the Norwalk community.
The ideal candidate for the full‑time recreation coordinator position should possess a strong work ethic, thrive in a collaborative, innovative, fast‑paced environment, and be motivated to meet established goals, initiatives, and deadlines. The Recreation Coordinator role involves assisting in developing, organizing, and administering general recreation, teen, therapeutic, youth, and adult sports and aquatics programs. The role also includes organizing and conducting special events and performing related duties as required.

This position will require a 5/40 schedule, Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. Evenings and weekends are required to ensure supervisory coverage of the Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists in the planning and development of, and organizes and supervises leisure time activities for participants from preschool to advanced age groups; assists in planning the annual calendar of community and special events.
- Writes press releases, flyers, and other promotional materials to advertise and promote assigned recreation programs; maintains inventory of program supplies and equipment; makes facility reservations and safety inspections.
- Selects, plans, and implements cultural arts, physical activities and special interest activities. Projects estimates of personnel, equipment, and material needs for program activities.
- Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.
- Supervises, trains, evaluates assigned recreation personnel, including seasonal staff, contract employees and volunteers; recruits volunteer staff.
- Assists with the preparation of budget recommendations for the allocation of personnel, equipment and supplies for program activity areas.
- Works with community and professional groups to promote recreational programs.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, conducting arts/crafts activities for children, making arrangements for rental and use of recreation buildings, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc.
Knowledge of: the theories, principles, practices and programs common to the field of recreation and leisure services; methods for identifying community recreation needs; recreation philosophy, planning and administration; the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program.
