Description Of Work

The fire apparatus mechanic shall be responsible for the maintenance and general repair of all Fire Department apparatus and related equipment and shall maintain the records of all maintenance and inventory of tools and equipment.

General Duties
  • Maintenance and repair of Fire Apparatus and specialized equipment such as fire boats, hazmat vehicles, SCBA, and small engines and assorted power equipment.
  • Assist in the development of a preventive maintenance program for all apparatus and equipment.
  • Report immediately to superiors any apparatus out of service.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic systems for aerial devices and vehicle generators.
  • Repair, rebuild and maintain diesel‑powered apparatus and equipment under the supervision of the Supervising Fire Mechanic.
  • Perform welding and cutting operations to fabricate or repair apparatus and equipment.
  • Perform electrical diagnosis of 12‑volt and 24‑volt systems and multiplexed apparatus control systems and equipment.
  • Install or retrofit electrical systems on emergency lighting, equipment or vehicles.
  • Requisition adequate number of spare parts and maintain inventory records of the same.
  • Input all purchase orders, parts, and work orders into the department’s computerized tracking system.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Supervised By

Works under the supervision of the Supervising Fire Mechanic.

Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance of fire equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of high‑voltage electrical systems for diagnosing and repairing generators or marine equipment shore power.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to use diagnostic computer equipment and program vehicle electronics.
  • Ability to repair fire apparatus pumps, hydraulic ladder racks.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair vehicle air conditioning systems with proper recovery equipment.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials required to complete assignments.
  • Ability to understand and diagnose from electrical schematics, hydraulic schematics and computer‑aided repair manuals.
  • Ability to operate small and medium‑sized vehicles used to plow and maintain station parking lots.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school, GED or vocational technical school and three years’ experience as a medium/heavy duty vehicle mechanic.

Required Certifications
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Duty Truck certification in T2‑Diesel Engine within six (6) months of appointment to successfully complete the probationary period.
  • ASE certifications in T3‑Drive Train, T4‑Brakes, T5‑Suspension & Steering, T6‑Electrical/Electronic Systems, T7‑Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC), and T8‑Preventative Maintenance Inspection within eighteen (18) months of appointment.
  • Valid Class A or B State of Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of appointment.
Preferred Certifications

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) emergency vehicle certifications (F1) Inspection, Maintenance and Testing of Fire Apparatus. Additional NFPA certifications are desirable.

Other Requirements

Employee must supply general mechanic tools up to one inch (1”) to perform tasks described in this job description.
