Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedures and utilize computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
    • a. Perform venipuncture using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient.
    • b. Perform fingerstick procedures with correct technique and when unable to obtain specimen by venipuncture.
    • c. Perform heelstick on babies with correct technique.
    • d. Perform proper hand hygiene (i.e. soap and water, or hand sanitizer) before AND after patient contact.
    • e. Verify all information for accuracy and perform order entry with no errors.
    • f. Generate collection lists and can add on or cancel tests properly.
  • Identify patients and properly label specimen tubes.
    • a. Identify inpatient by checking name and hospital medical record number or date of birth on patient armband and comparing this information to the LIS labels.
    • b. Identify outpatient by asking the patient to state their first and last name, and their date of birth and comparing this information to the registration face sheet, wristband, and LIS labels.
    • c. Use handheld device to scan wristband, print labels, and scan labeled specimens into the system at the patient’s chairside/bedside.
    • d. Ensure orders are checked to the printed specimen labels to confirm all tests are ordered and correct.
    • e. Label all specimen tubes following established procedure: LIS barcode label, date and time of draw, and phlebotomist initials.
  • Determine priority of STAT draws. Ensure timely transport of all patient specimens to lab. Organize assigned work and accurately complete assigned workload.
    • a. Prioritize STAT request. Draw STATs within 5-10 minutes of request; hourly for routines.
    • b. Ensure that STATs are transported to lab on a priority basis immediately for serious cases;
      Trauma, disaster, Stroke, Chest Pain.
    • c. Make conscientious effort to ensure turnaround times that meet Chest Pain and Stroke Accreditation standards.
    • d. Organize morning routes and accept add on’s.
    • f. Inform Supervisor of problems in obtaining specimens for any reason.
    • g. Inform floors of missed patients or patients not drawn for any reason at time of attempt.
  • Under supervision, help in the training of new employees and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties.
    • a. Work with new employees to assist in training of departmental procedures, and properly complete training checklists to ensure new employee competence.
    • b. Act as a resource to new employees.
  • Attend all required safety training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job‑related hazards.
    • a. Complete Education Day, required in‑services, required readings, and other competency requirements in a timely manner.
    • b. Maintain work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
    • c. Operate assigned equipment and perform all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
    • d. Demonstrate proper body mechanics in all functions.
  • Responsibly follow the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
    • a. Demonstrate knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
    • b. Ensure a safe environment by instituting appropriate control measures.
    • c. Attend annual education programs.
    • d. Wear clean gloves when drawing all patients.
    • e. Perform proper hand hygiene before and after contact with patients, following glove removal and prior to leaving the department.
    • f. Dispose of needles in biohazard sharps containers.
    • g. Personal cell phones and electronic devices stored in employee’s locker and not out in working/testing areas.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
    • a. Interact with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner, as observed by the supervisor and peers.
    • b. Foster mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner, as measured by management observation and peer input.
