Position: 1:1 Paraprofessional Long Term Substitute

Job Summary

A One-on-One Paraprofessional Long Term Substitute works with an individual student to provide activities and experiences designed to help fulfill the student's potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This is a temporary long‑term substitute position to fill a leave assignment during the  academic year.

Reports to:

Director of Student Services & Classroom Teacher.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the classroom teacher in the instruction of an individual student, including assistance in laboratories, washrooms, playgrounds, gymnasiums, lunchrooms, libraries, field trips, and all other educational settings as determined by the classroom teacher.
  • Support the diversity of the student population through cultural and family engagement and the inclusion of diverse learners throughout the school.
  • Assist the student in behavior management, instructional support, activities of daily living, social skills training, task redirection, etc.
  • Provide reinforcement to the individual of direct material initially taught by the classroom teacher.
  • Guide enrichment work and remedial work set up by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist the student in any testing.
  • Implement any behavior plans.
  • Communicate as needed with various groups outside the classroom—including social worker, parents, school psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, and physical therapist—to assure smooth transition and understanding of the student.
  • Assist in implementing activities prescribed by outside service providers (i.e., school psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist).
  • Maintain a daily student activity log.
  • Conferring and planning with teachers related to IEP objectives and/or modifications, and providing documentation.
  • Assist the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences as required.
  • Work on days when the assigned student is absent.
  • Perform other duties as may be necessary and assigned by the classroom teacher and/or Director of Student Services.
