Job Summary
This is a new consultant post in Obstetrics to support increasing workload and career progression of current postholders. The post is suited to a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who has completed their training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The successful applicant would join a team of 12 consultant Obstetricians (WTE) delivering high risk antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.
Main DutiesThis post covers general antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal obstetric care with the ability to have a subspeciality interest in Fetal Medicine, Preterm Birth or Research depending on the applicants experience. Consultant labour ward presence will be covered by 13 consultants with resident cover for approximately 100 hours per week. There is separate consultant on call cover for gynaecology. The post is initially for 8 PAs (80% WTE), with a 100% WTE on call commitment to be reflected in the job plan.
There will be scope to increase routine activity further with the ongoing expansion of services delivered by the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group.
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of acute clinical services through the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (1,000 beds) and Cromer and District Hospital, including more specialist services such as oncology and radiotherapy, neonatology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, paediatric medicine and surgery. Our staff of over 7,000 treat more than one million patients;
people from Norfolk, neighbouring counties and further afield. Our patients are referred to us by around 100 local GP practices but also from other acute hospitals and primary care trusts around the country. As a university teaching hospital we have developed our research and development strategy in partnership with the University of East Anglia. We also work closely with our partners on the Norwich Research Park and Norwich Radiology Academy to take forward our ambitious targets for research and development.

Person Specification – Essential Qualifications- MB BS or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- PLAB or equivalent
- MRCOG or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or equivalent, or proposed CCT date within 6 months of the interview
- Post‑graduate degree (MD, PhD)
- Subspecialist training in Maternal Fetal Medicine
- SITM in Fetal Care
- SITM Premature Birth Prevention
- ATSM Advanced Labour Ward Practice
- Extensive obstetric experience able to perform all roles in the job description.
- Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 7 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty.
- Training and expertise in children's safeguarding
- Experience dealing with complex antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care
- Experience in research or published papers in area of special interest
- Experience in obstetric training e.g. MOET or PPROMPT instructor
- Experience in risk management with demonstration of Root Cause analysis investigator experience.
- Exhibits and has references acknowledging ability and skills commensurate with experience stated above and should include skills in dealing with specific situations (e.g. handling Obstetric emergencies appropriately, counselling and treating upset patients and their relatives).
