Clinical Fellow

This is a non-training post The Orthopaedic Clinical Fellows, Specialty Trainees and Foundation Trainees are responsible for the day-to-day running of orthopaedic beds situated mainly in ward 6 (trauma) ward 22(elective) ward 10B (paeds) and for any other orthopaedic patients withinthe hospital. There is no formal accident and emergency commitment other than toassess and manage patients with orthopaedic problems during the oncall shift (day or night 12 hour shift).

Clinical duties can include attending orthopaedic and fracture outpatient clinics, assisting in operating sessions and in consultant and associate specialist ward rounds, which are often informal teaching sessions. Although the Clinical Fellow posts are not recognised for training, theposts mirror the specialty trainees in all aspects of training, education and study leave., Although this position does not carry Postgraduate Dean's approval for training recognition, it offers full teaching and training opportunities.

The successful candidate will be allocated a named clinical and educational supervisor to oversee their development and career. They will also be assisted and encouraged to perform audit projects and participate in research., The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH) is seeking to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Orthopaedics on a fixed term basis for 12 months. The appointee will have responsibility for the day-to-day running of orthopaedic beds situated mainly in ward 6 (trauma) ward 22 (elective) & ward 10B (paeds) and for any other orthopaedic patients within the hospital.

The Orthopaedic and fracture clinic comprises 5 cubicles and 3 offices. There is a fully equipped plaster room staffed by 3 experienced technicians. The Orthotics department is also attached to the outpatient unit. The department is staffed by 10 full time consultants and 9 middle grades with support in paediatric and spinal Orthopaedics from visiting consultants based at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

There is dedicated Orthogeriatric support for fracture neck of femur patients and physiotherapy support for post-operative rehabilitation. A broad range of Orthopaedic activity is undertaken here including lower limb surgery and joint replacements, upper limb surgery and trauma. Pelvic and acetabular surgery and more complex spine surgery are done ior doctors have allocated time on the rota for theatre sessions and clinic exposure to enhance their orthopaedic knowledge.

There are regular meetings on Monday lunchtimes which include junior doctor presentations as well as teaching sessions on Wednesdays. The junior doctors are encouraged to participate in departmental audit and research.

• MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
• MRCS or equivalent or Mch Orthopaedics or equivalent
• Full GMC Registration, Wide experience in Orthopaedics
• Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty
• A minimum of 3 years experience at SHO level or higher
• Proven clinical experience and training in Orthopaedics
• Capable of organising and prioritising work effectively
• Able to plan and develop a modern service in keeping with current trends
• Willingness to participate in and lead a multi disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives, Good experience in Trauma and Joint Anthroplasty
• Experience of committee work/project management
• Development of a special interest
• Academic Achievements,
• Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
• Familiarity with conducting clinical audit
• Knowledge of using evidence base to support decision making, Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies
• Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
• Energy and enthusiasm to contribute to the education of Medical Students
• Willingness to participate in a multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
• Experience in teaching junior medical staff
• Commitment to continuing professional development, Willing to undertake some management and/or administrative duties
• Experience of teaching medical students
• Formal training in teaching skills, Awareness and respect for colleagues, patients and relatives' dignity, privacy, integrity, cultural and religious beliefs
• Ability to remain calm and work effectively in pressure situations
