Start Date: September 2026

Contract: Full-time, Permanent (Shift-Pattern Framework)

Salary: Paid to scale (Support Staff Framework)

The Role

A progressive Secondary School in Norwich is seeking a professional, reliable, and highly organised School Caretaker to join their dedicated site operations team. This hands‑on position is vital for maintaining the daily functionality, physical security, and cleanliness of a busy secondary campus, offering an excellent opportunity for a skilled technician or property maintenance professional looking for a stable role within a highly collaborative team in the East of England.

The successful candidate will work across a rotating shift system to facilitate the secure opening, closing, and lock‑up routines of the school premises. Primary responsibilities include executing general building maintenance tasks—such as minor carpentry, basic plumbing fixes, painting, and glazing repairs—alongside conducting routine statutory safety monitoring (including water temperature testing, playground checks, and fire door inspections). The candidate will also assist with assembly and exam set‑ups, manage incoming logistical deliveries, monitor cleaning supplies, and respond efficiently to reactive maintenance tickets submitted via the school’s digital tracking platform.

The role requires clear, professional communication with the Site Manager, teaching staff, and external community groups utilizing the school’s facilities out of hours, requiring absolute reliability and discretion at all times. Strong time‑management skills are required to balance urgent porterage requests with routine compliance tasks across a large site.

School Information

This is an 11 to 18 well‑established school in Norwich with a powerful commitment to student wellbeing, community inclusion, and operational excellence. The school serves a diverse, vibrant community and features modern, heavily resourced practical departments and high‑spec learning facilities.

Students are exceptionally respectful and motivated, treating the school environment with care. The premises and caretaking team enjoy a highly respected position within the faculty, and senior leaders actively prioritize balanced workloads, manageable administrative duties, and funded pathways for continuous technical safety training (such as working at heights, manual handling, or basic health and safety modules).

Requirements
  • Previous practical experience in caretaking, building maintenance, porterage, or a relevant practical trade discipline
  • Strong hands‑on competency in basic DIY, minor carpentry/plumbing, and general fabric repair workflows
  • Good understanding of basic health and safety protocols and safe manual handling frameworks
  • Basic IT literacy, with the ability to navigate digital logging platforms and update maintenance tickets
  • Ability to work effectively and flexibly across a rotating early/late shift pattern framework
