Position: Anglican Chaplain (Priest)

Job Overview

The job holder will work with colleagues to ensure the delivery of PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners or its successor policy framework and to support the broader chaplaincy work of delivering faith and non‑faith based courses.

Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance on faith/belief system in the establishment, advising, pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff and families as requested and liaising with the Faith and Belief Adviser.
  • Plan and lead worship, meditation, prayer and faith/belief specific meetings.
  • Ensure the provision of available and accessible chaplaincy care at all times.
  • Facilitate and deliver opportunities for worship, meditation, study and religious programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with other chaplains, the Managing Chaplain, volunteers and external groups on the maintenance and provision of facilities for worship and prayer.
  • Contribute to development of local policy, procedures and practice.
  • Provide pastoral care to prisoners and help resolve crisis situations.
  • Provide mentoring and personal support for other chaplains and volunteers, including after incidents.
  • Support and nurture chaplaincy volunteers in their contributions.
  • Collaborate with the Official Prison Visitor liaison officer to promote the scheme within the prison and assist volunteers.
  • Ensure the prison community is aware of faith/belief events and coordinate establishment support.
  • Acquire and distribute appropriate faith/belief literature, artefacts and materials.
  • Contribute to training programmes and materials for staff and volunteers.
  • Help organise and deliver Faith Awareness Training for staff.
  • Represent the chaplaincy team at establishment meetings and committees in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
  • Actively support the ACCT process and attend relevant boards and meetings, contributing as chair or team member.
  • With agreement, take on additional roles such as Family Liaison Officer, Family Services single point of contact or volunteer coordinator.
  • Forge links with local faith/belief communities and other agencies and seek ways to involve them in supporting prisoners on release.
  • Develop and assist in achieving targets, collating relevant administration, data collection and analysis.
  • Assist in Probation Approved Premises and other HMPPS funded community initiatives for offenders on release or serving community sentences.
Qualifications
  • Be an Ordained Priest of the Anglican Communion (or of churches signatory to the Porvoo and Meissen Agreements) with at least three years in Holy Orders.
  • Have formal endorsement in the form of the Licence of the Diocesan Bishop and a signed Church of England (or equivalent) documentation on mutual flourishing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Anglican theology and religious practice, and have up‑to‑date safeguarding training.
  • Possess a Diocesan DBS clearance.
  • Be able to fulfil all spoken and written aspects of the role with confidence, primarily in English (Welsh where specified).
Working Hours and Conditions

This role requires working regular unsocial hours – those outside 0700–1900, Monday to Friday – which will be recognised by an additional 20% payment above basic pay. Hybrid working arrangements may be available, subject to business needs and that the role is based in the UK.
