Postdoctoral Researcher – Charpentier Group (John Innes Centre)

Postdoctoral Researcher (36 months, full‑time)

Investigate the mechanisms of nuclear calcium oscillation decoding using bioinformatic and AI approaches, focusing on the interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizae and nitrogen‑fixing bacteria within an interdisciplinary, international environment.
Key Responsibilities- Identify, plan, carry out and adjust experiments to meet project objectives (55%)
- Prepare results, reports and manuscripts for publication (10%)
- Disseminate findings through presentations at internal, national and international meetings (5%)
- Collaborate within the Institute, contributing to research proposals and grant applications (5%)
- Liaise with industry and other external stakeholders (5%)
- Ensure research and record‑keeping comply with good practice, scientific integrity and local policies (5%)
- Support group operations, including supervision of visitors and training others (5%)
- Actively seek feedback and learning opportunities to drive excellence (5%)
- Additional duties agreed with line manager (5%)
- PhD (full award or expected within 6 months) in bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, computational biology, plant signalling or a related discipline (essential)
- BSc or equivalent in the same fields (essential)
- Developing and applying computational methods for large‑scale biological datasets (e.g. RNA‑seq, Chip‑seq, protein structure prediction) (essential)
- Experience in delivering oral research presentations (essential)
- Demonstrated scientific writing ability (essential)
- Preparing data/information for grant proposals (desirable)
- Experience supervising, training and mentoring visitors and students (desirable)
- Excellent written and oral communication, including presenting complex information clearly (essential)
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team (essential)
- Independent, initiative‑driven, with solid problem‑solving skills (essential)
- Excellent time‑management and organisational skills (essential)
