Overview

Probation Service Officer responsible for working with offenders before and after sentence, providing assessment, risk management, court reporting and support to aid their rehabilitation.

Compensation
  • Starting salary £28,064, with annual pay progression via the Competency Based Framework (CBF).
  • Eligibility for prison allowance of £781 may apply.
  • Pay band ranges increased yearly in line with Civil Service guidance.
Eligibility & Nationality Rules
  • Right to work in the UK required.
  • Open to UK nationals, Republic of Ireland nationals, Commonwealth nationals with right to work, EU/Switzerland/Norway/Iceland/Liechtenstein nationals and family members with settled or pre‑settled status, individuals with limited or indefinite leave to remain eligible on certain dates, Turkish nationals and certain families, and those with EUSS status.
  • Skilled Worker visa holders prior to 22 July 2025 will be considered; new visa holders after this date are not eligible for sponsorship.
Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of medium and lower risk offenders, both before and after sentence.
  • Conduct assessments and implement sentencing decisions.
  • Provide information to courts and liaise with partner agencies.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports and documentation.
  • Offer practical advice on housing, employment and general support.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional judgement throughout.
Qualifications
  • Degree not required; experience with people facing social or personal difficulties preferred.
  • Empathetic, patient and resilient approach to working with offenders.
  • Excellent written communication and report‑writing skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
