SummaryTo support the commissioning of a new flagship Science and Technology Center, this proposal recommends the temporary addition of a contingent Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist. This role is essential for ensuring a smooth transition from current operations to the new facility and for managing the significant but short‑term workload associated with commissioning. The contingent worker will operate alongside the current EHS Specialist and may transition into a permanent role on the Americas EHS team following a planned retirement in mid‑2026.
StrategicNeed
Commissioning the new Science and Technology Center involves complex regulatory and operational tasks that require dedicated EHS support. These tasks include transferring environmental permits, updating risk assessments and emergency action plans, and ensuring personnel are trained under the new operational framework. While the current EHS Specialist will relocate to the new site, additional support is needed to manage the transition effectively, maintain compliance, and allow lab activities to resume without delay.
Key Responsibilities Commissioning Support- Transfer of regulatory permits for air, waste, and water from the existing facility to the new one.
- Updating risk assessments and emergency action plans to reflect new operations.
- Coordinating with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance throughout commissioning.
- Supporting development and delivery of training programs for new site operations.
- Ensuring documentation is updated to reflect new procedures and safety protocols.
- Working alongside the current EHS Specialist to ensure continuity of operations and avoid delays in lab start‑up.
- Troubleshooting EHS issues related to the start‑up of lab activities, experiments, and testing.
- Preparing for potential transition into a permanent role following a planned retirement in mid‑2026.
This temporary role ensures regulatory compliance and operational readiness during a critical transition period, reducing the risk of delays or non‑compliance during commissioning. It also supports continuity and knowledge transfer within the EHS team.
Resource GapThe current EHS Specialist is fully allocated to existing operations and will transition to the new site. The temporary addition of a contingent worker fills a short‑term gap created by increased workload and an upcoming retirement, without increasing long‑term headcount.
Organization StructureThe contingent EHS Specialist will work alongside the current EHS Specialist, Research & Approvals, based in Norwood and will report directly to the EHS Manager, Research & Approvals. If successful, and based on defined performance criteria, the contingent worker may be promoted to EHS Specialist Americas following the retirement of the current EHS Manager Americas and the subsequent promotion of the EHS Specialist Americas.
