Overview

Read and go for walks with a blind woman in Norwood, MA!

Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI) offers a Community Volunteer Program that pairs volunteers with visually impaired adults in their local community. We are seeking volunteers in the Boston region, including the city of Boston, willing to travel at least 10‑15 miles to assist a participant in Norwood, MA.

Responsibilities
  • Reading mail
  • Paying bills
  • Internet use/technology assistance
  • Medical transportation
  • Grocery shopping and running errands in the community
  • Recreational activities, such as walking or running with the participant as a sighted guide
  • Other clerical tasks as needed
Time Commitment

Volunteers typically devote 1‑2 hours per week or every other week, depending on the participant’s needs.

Volunteer Onboarding Process
  • Complete a MABVI Volunteer application
  • Finish the online, modular MABVI Volunteer Training
  • Schedule a Zoom conversation with a member of the MABVI Volunteer Team and submit a criminal background check (CORI)
  • Meet the MABVI Volunteer Team via Zoom or phone call
  • Match with a MABVI participant
Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to travel at least 10‑15 miles within the Boston area
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to commit 1‑2 hours weekly or biweekly
  • Positive attitude and dedication to serving the blind and low‑vision community
