Specialty Trainee (ST3+)
We are looking for a Trust Grade doctor to join NUH’s Stroke team at CT3+ level. The post is initially 12 months with potential extension.
Job overviewThis role suits those with full MRCP and experience in Geriatric Medicine, Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics or General (Internal) Medicine, and those intending to pursue a career in Stroke Medicine.
Opportunities include audits, governance activities, service improvement projects and patient care in TIA clinics ED. The post covers hyper‑acute stroke admissions ward, provides support and advice to junior doctors and the ED team, and participates in a 5‑day/week Mechanical Thrombectomy service.
Main duties of the jobPost holders will:
- Provide clinical care across all stroke areas, including hyper‑acute and acute wards and rehabilitation ward.
- Attend and lead ward rounds, assess patients, and make independent clinical decisions under consultant supervision.
- Participate in audits, educational teaching, and service improvement projects.
- Support junior doctors and ED staff in the management of acute stroke and related conditions.

Post holders will:
- Build upon postgraduate clinical experience.
- Develop expertise in acute stroke management, including thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, and assessment for decompressive hemicraniectomy.
- Recognise and manage stroke mimics and other medical conditions, informing decisions on admission, alternative strategies, and early discharge.
- Advance history taking, physical examination, investigation interpretation, and rational prescribing.
- Progress toward independent Registrar‑level practice, leading ward rounds and making decisions with consultant support.
- GMC registration with licence to practice.
- Full ALS certification.
- Full MRCP.
- MBBS or equivalent.
- IELTS core minimum 7.5 with no area below 7.5, or minimum grade B in all four OET subtests.
- Recent, wide‑ranging clinical experience in acute inpatient settings in a large hospital.
- Completion of key competencies equivalent to at least ST3 level.
- Experience working out of hours with limited support.
- NHS experience at ST3/CT3 level.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Active involvement in design and running of relevant clinical audits.
- Experience presenting case reports, audit or research findings.
- Experience supervising junior colleagues.
