Detailed job description and main responsibilities- Immediate life saving interventions by attending and participating in trauma calls in resus.
- Interpreting initial investigations quickly including blood gas, X‑ray and CT results in resus.
- Being part of the liaising with other members of the trauma team, from all different specialties and documenting findings and plans in the Major Trauma admissions documentation.
- The main elements of a trauma call including how these should be coordinated and documented.
- The management of multi‑system trauma.
- Primary and secondary surveys of Major Trauma patients in resus.
- Tertiary surveys on day 2 of admission.
- Participating in the daily ward round.
- The pre‑operative assessment of patients with multiple injuries.
- The appropriate use of monitoring in level 1 beds and interpretation of data obtained.
- Liaising with the multi‑professional team in interpreting data for different team members and planning ongoing care.
- The provision of safe and effective care including pain relief to patients undergoing all required surgical procedures.
- The safe and effective use of postoperative pain management to ensure that rehabilitation can be carried out effectively.
- Leading planning of ongoing care and reconstruction phase of the Major Trauma patients' in‑patient pathway.
- Surgery lists as required for Major trauma damage limitation and ongoing care surgery.
Participation in audit and research is expected. As part of the clinical fellowship you will be required to attend morbidity / mortality meetings.
TeachingYou will be expected to take an active part in the departmental rolling teaching programme, both of the Junior Fellow post holders and medical students.

- MBBS or equivalent.
- Full GMC Registration with license to practice in the UK.
- Completion of Foundation (FY1 and FY2) training or equivalent.
- At least 12 months of post Foundation training experience in Major Trauma or affiliated surgical specialty.
- IELTS core minimum 7.5 with no individual area going under 7.5 or minimum Grade B in all four subsets of Occupational English Test.
- Completion of Core Training in a programme affiliated to Major Trauma.
- Postgraduate examinations.
- Able to identify an acutely deteriorating patient.
- Able to perform basic technical skills including urinary catheterisation, NG tube insertion, ABG sampling, ECG and chest drains.
- Previous experience in any of the following specialties: major trauma, general surgery, anaesthetics, emergency department, orthopaedics, any other specialty related to Major Trauma.
- Previous work in a Major Trauma Centre.
- Publication in peer review journals on topics related to general surgery or trauma.
- Good standard of written English.
- Demonstrable skills in spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
- Able to work within multidisciplinary teams.
- Basic computer skills.
- Good knowledge of a hospital's Governance systems and the role of a doctor in these processes.
- Completion of one audit project.
- Participation in:
Quality Improvement, Local/National audit, Research, Information Governance, Risk Assessment, Serious Incident Reviews.
- Adaptable and responsive to change.
- Able to prioritise and manage time effectively.
- Willingness to contribute to departmental teaching sessions.
- Willing to work in a flexible environment with colleagues and to supervise less experienced trainees.
- Previously organised local or regional teaching courses.
