Junior or Senior Clinical Fellow, Children and Young People’s ED
The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is offering a 12‑month maternity leave cover to a motivated doctor to join our friendly Children and Young People’s (CYP) Emergency Department team.
Depending on your experience you will be appointed to a Junior Fellow role (equivalent to CT1, CT2 or CT3) or to our ST4+ equivalent rota. You may be considered for the Senior Fellow role if you hold full MRCEM or MRCPCH at the time of applying.
This post is an ideal opportunity for anyone wishing to gain more experience or exposure in paediatric ED prior to applying to a National Training Programme or joining a local CESR programme.
You will work in a forward‑thinking, dynamic department committed to the Trust’s ambition of developing staff and delivering outstanding healthcare outcomes for patients.
Main duties of the jobWorking in our CYPED involves many management skills, including managing the shop floor, keeping to the four‑hour target and constant reprioritisation of tasks.
You will be supported to work through competencies, develop portfolio evidence to meet your objectives and work under the clinical direction of CYPED Consultants who are present 24/7. An Educational and Clinical supervisor will be allocated to you.

We have clearly set out the essential criteria for the role below.
For a Junior post you are expected to have at least three years post‑MBBS (or equivalent) and at least one year in an NHS Emergency Department. Experience in paediatric medicine, paediatric surgery or paediatric emergency medicine is desirable. You must be an APLS provider and have good recent experience of clinical medicine in an acute inpatient setting.
For a Senior post you are expected to have at least five years post‑MBBS (or equivalent) and at least one year in an NHS Emergency Department. Experience in paediatric medicine, paediatric surgery or paediatric emergency medicine is desirable. You must be an APLS provider, hold full MRCEM or MRCPCH, and have good recent experience of clinical medicine in an acute inpatient setting.
These are service posts and do not have educational approval, but you will receive excellent training and educational opportunities tailored to your needs. You will be expected to keep up to date, attend clinical meetings, and participate in audit and service training of other professionals.
Clinical Fellows in the CYPED can expect to:
- Build on previous experience and develop increased expertise in identification, assessment and management of sick patients.
- Gain experience managing a wide variety of medical conditions and decision‑making around admission and discharge.
- Gain experience managing poly‑trauma patients and the concept of silver trauma.
- Acquire additional skills such as fascia iliaca block and chest drain.
- Enhance communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues.
- Keep up to date with mandatory training for your role.
- Participate in the annual appraisal process.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with licence to practice

- For Senior post:
Full MRCEM or MRCPCH
- Completion of Foundation training (or equivalent)
- At least 3 years post‑MBBS (or 5 years for Senior post)
- Experience in an NHS ED setting
- Experience in a large acute hospital (more than 1000 beds)
- Relevant additional experience in paediatric medicine, paediatric surgery or paediatric emergency medicine
- Good written English
- Enthusiasm and commitment to work with children and their families
- Evidence of active involvement in design and running of relevant clinical audit
- Presentation of case reports, audit or research results
- Motivation to pursue a career in paediatric emergency medicine
- Evidence of participation in research or audit related to paediatric topics
- Audit or research publications related to paediatric topics
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exception Order) 1975 and requires a submission for Disclosure and Barring Service (previously CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Salary£54,499 to £67,325 a year. For Junior posts the salary will be £54,499 and for Senior posts £67,325.
