The appointee will be within the General Surgery Clinical Directorate (CDU) and join the team specialising in Emergency General Surgery. The CDU works in specialist teams (Emergency, Colorectal, Upper GI, Breast and Vascular) with good collaboration and excellent working relationships between teams.

• Deliver emergency general surgery at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, with coverage from Monday to Thursday during daytime by a team of 4+2 consultants on a surgical floor with three wards.
• Oversee elective patient care at Wycombe Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Hospital, including local elective surgical centre, day‑case and inpatient elective surgery.
• Provide urgent and operative care in shared surgical and specialist spaces, including a surgical assessment unit, consulting rooms, minor ops room and future enhanced care beds.
• Support the ambulatory emergency surgical service and daily emergency clinic.
• Participate in out‑of‑hours and weekend cover on a 1‑in‑12 frequency.
• Engage in clinical governance, audit and continuous professional development (CPD) activities.
• Act as a mentor and clinical/educational supervisor for residents and tutors in the training program.

• Full GMC registration.

• Experience teaching doctors‑in‑training and undergraduates.
• Experience in clinical audit.

• General training in general surgery to specialist level or equivalent.
• Experience and training in the surgical management of common, emergency non‑specialised conditions in children.
• Specialised endocrine surgery and emergency general surgery.
• Extensive full‑time equivalent years of experience in emergency general surgery.
• Ability to make decisions at consultant level.

• Full GMC registration.
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP); proposed date within 6 months of interview. Alternatively, CESR or European Community Rights.
• An appropriate higher surgical qualification in general surgery.
