About the College

Northumberland College is Ofsted Outstanding and is currently building a multi-million, state of the art, new college campus in Ashington, due to open in 2026. The successful candidate will be based at the new college where a purpose-built construction, housing, advanced manufacturing and engineering centre will be located.

Curriculum spans technical, vocational further and higher education and includes large apprenticeship provision and dedicated centres for young people with SEND.

The College has two main campuses in Ashington, and Ponteland, and as part of the college group Education Partnership Northeast, it also has a significant number of satellite delivery centres across the region.

Served by easy road links, and the new train station in Ashington, when Northumberland College opens its new Department for Education backed campus at Wansbeck Business Park, the college will boast a national trailblazer both in architectural design and operation. This major £52 million+ investment comes on top of the College recently driving £14million into new facilities and resources at its existing sites.

If you’re making the move into further education teaching, you may be eligible for the Taking Teaching Further (TTF) programme a funded route to help industry professionals retrain as FE teachers.

In addition, for roles in high-need subjects or regions you may also benefit from the government’s targeted retention incentive (formerly “levelling-up premium”) payments, worth up to £6,000 for eligible teachers in their first five years and teaching certain shortage subjects.

How will this person be a Change maker?

You will re-engage learners who are at risk of becoming NEET and help them see a future in education and employment. You will build a curriculum that develops confidence, regulation and real vocational skills in construction. You will influence practice across the provision and help shape a consistent, high-quality SEMH offer.

About the Role

This is a programme leadership role within our new Connect2 SEMH curriculum, with a focus on Construction basic skills. You will develop and lead a structured programme that supports learners with SEMH needs to re-engage with education and progress into further learning or employment.

This is a new and growing provision, which gives you the opportunity to shape the curriculum, systems and learner journey from the start. You will work closely with the Curriculum Manager to design a sequenced, career-focused offer that balances vocational learning with personal development.

You will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, contribute to wider curriculum design and work with external partners to create meaningful progression routes. You will also support the use of adaptive teaching approaches and tools that meet the needs of SEMH learners.

Role Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver a high-quality Construction programme within the Connect2 SEMH provision
  • Design and sequence learning that builds practical skills, confidence and employability
  • Track learner progress, attendance and behaviour, using data to drive improvement

    Build strong relationships with learners, families and external professionals
  • Support and guide staff to ensure consistent, adaptive teaching approaches
  • Develop progression pathways into further education, training or employment
Qualifications
  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards
  • Experience working with learners with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
  • Experience delivering vocational or practical-based learning
  • Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills
