Job Description & How to Apply Below

Stipend: £32,882 (with a PhD) or £26,745 (without a PhD)

The College invites applications for two stipendiary Junior Research Fellowships in specified areas of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. They will be tenable for four years from normally no later than 1 October 2027 and are not renewable.

A Junior Research Fellowship is intended for a researcher early in their career and, in this case, is restricted to applicants in one or more of the following subject areas:

  • Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
  • English (limited to literature of 1800 to the present day) *
  • Linguistics (theoretical and applied)
  • Modern and Medieval Languages (limited to French and Francophone, German, Italian, or Slavonic) *
  • Theology

The first of the two posts is available to applicants in any of the subject areas listed, while the second is available only to applicants in the asterisked subject areas. There is no need to apply separately for the two posts: all applicants will be considered for the first post and automatically also for the second if they are eligible.

Each Junior Research Fellowship offers an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating academic environment. A successful applicant is expected to be either a postgraduate student, probably in the latter stages of research leading to a PhD degree (or equivalent), or a post-doctoral researcher who has completed their PhD Degree after 1

January 2026.

The stipend for a Junior Research Fellow is currently £32,882 (with a PhD) or £26,745 (without a PhD) and the successful candidate will be afforded the full privileges of a Fellow of the College. Fellows living out of College receive a pensionable living-out allowance of £7,457 (with a PhD) or £3,728 (without a PhD).

Applications must be submitted online via the Christ’s College website at by 12 noon on Tuesday 15 September 2026 . Reports from two referees must also be received by the same deadline for the application to be eligible. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their referees submit their references by the deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be asked for copies of written work and may be invited for an interview, expected to be on or around Tuesday 19 January 2027.

Further details of the Fellowship competition are provided on the website.

Any candidate who does not have an automatic right to work in the United Kingdom will be themselves responsible for obtaining the necessary visa (although the College can give informal advice and assistance). The College will itself cover the cost of the visa and the associated healthcare surcharge (for the successful Fellows only).

Christ’s College is an equal opportunities employer.
