Teaching Associate in Ethnomusicology

The Department of Music at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Ethnomusicology.

You will have a PhD qualification or equivalent in Music, and an emerging or established career as an ethnomusicologist nationally and/or internationally. You will have an advanced and wide-ranging knowledge of the field of ethnomusicology. You will have previous experience teaching ethnomusicology at HE level and experience of assessment at HE level.

Your primary duties will include delivering the teaching and assessment of the undergraduate module Approaches to Popular Music (Levels Two and Three) and the supervision of undergraduate students researching ethnomusicological topics. In addition, you will serve as the administrator of a research symposium.

You will contribute to an exceptional education for undergraduates in music and make an exceptional contribution to the Department’s teaching profile and culture. You will be keen to pursue opportunities for teaching development, impact, public engagement, and/or interdisciplinary work. You will offer pastoral support to students as a Personal Tutor and be keen on championing and promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives.

We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. We are welcoming, supportive, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values. We are, therefore, particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented as ethnomusicologists, such as those of underrepresented genders (e.g., women, non-binary, trans) and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.

Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter.

As a Teaching Associate you will be expected to:

Deliver innovative teaching.

Contribute positively and proactively to the Department’s teaching culture.

Assess Undergraduate students in music.

Take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students, dealing with sensitive issues.

This is a fixed-term, part-time (21.75 hours per week) role commencing 1 February 2027 until 30 June 2027.

Our university is a supportive, inclusive, caring and positive community. We welcome those of different cultures, ethnicities and beliefs – indeed this very diversity is vital to our success, it is fundamental to our values and enriches life on campus. Visit our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion website.

To help you succeed, we published Candidate Guidance to provide support on the application and interview process.

We welcome applications from UK, Europe and worldwide and aim to make your move to the UK as smooth as possible. Visit the Moving to Nottingham page for details.

Your application will be considered on an equal basis, subject to the relevant permission to work in the UK as set out by UK Visas & Immigration .
